What
causes a ruptured disc?
The spine is made up of bones,
called vertebrae, which are connected by
strong
ligaments to protective gel-filled discs.
These discs are placed between each vertebra
to act as cushioning for the bones. As the
discs lose water content over time, they
also lose their protective padding. The resultant
laxity and natural weakening of the connective
ligaments causes the
discs to become vulnerable.
A minor strain can then easily cause the
discs to shift and a portion of them to protrude
into the spinal canal. When this occurs, it
is called a ruptured disc.
Other terms for ruptured disc: herniated
disc, bulging
disc, slipped
disc
