Degenerative
disc disease is essentially a
term for the process involved with herniated
discs. Over time, the discs that support
our spinal bones lose some of their water
content, which weakens them. As they wear
down, the discs can shift and protrude into
the spinal nerves. The wearing down of the
discs is a natural process that occurs over
time. Some people feel great pain from the
interference of the discs with the spinal
nerves, while others don’t. Degenerative
disc disease would usually describe someone
who does experience pain that can be debilitating,
spreading to the arms and legs.
History shows that degenerative disc disease
involves a cycle of disc shifting, severe
pain, and then the natural correction of
the problem. However, this can occur over
a 20-30 year period, so it may be a hard
cycle to ride out if the pain cannot be controlled.
In most cases of degenerative disc disease,
when conservative therapy, such as medication,
rest, physical therapy, and pain management,
is not sufficient, percutaneous
laser disc decompression (PLDD) is
the best alternative to surgery.
