What
causes a bulging disc?
Throughout the spine is a series
of bones called vertebrae. These are separated
by gristle-like, gel-filled discs
that are held in place by strong connective
ligaments. These discs provide shock absorption
and motion between the vertebrae. Over time,
the center of the disc can lose water content,
which
means they lose their ability to provide
padding. The lack of cushioning together
with the natural resultant laxity of the
ligaments creates a vulnerability in the
discs. A minor
strain can then cause shifting of the disc
material and protrusion of it into the spinal
canal nerves. This is a bulging disc.
Other terms for bulging disc: herniated
disc, ruptured
disc, slipped
disc
